Michigan Holds Off Central Florida 3-1

Adam Goldberg's 23 Save Effort Fuels Victory

 February 2nd, 2009 at 6:08AM  February 6th, 2009 2:32AM
Seth Rogers (Michigan) and Jeff Cohen (Central Florida) battle for the puck during Michigan's 3-1 victory.

Mount Pleasant, Pa - Adam Goldberg made 23 saves, including 13 in the final period to lead the Michigan Wolverines past Central Florida 3-1.

After playing to a scoreless draw in the first period, Michigan drew first blood when James Arakaki and Derrick Boroski hooked up to stake the Wolverines a 1-0 lead. Jeff Cohen, Connor Cafferty and Joseph LaRocco connected four minutes later to tie the game at 1. Things stayed that way until two minutes remaining in the second stanza. With Michigan down a man, Boroski intercepted a UCF pass and headed the length of the rink before sliding a back hand through the five hole of Daniel Moon for the all important 2-1 lead.

From that moment on, the story of the game was Adam Goldberg. Goldberg made save after save in the third period, including numerous chances by both Cohen and Cafferty. Goldberg made 13 saves in the third period, none more important them when a UCF player broke free down low and made a nice move getting Goldberg out of position. At the last possible second, Goldberg threw up his glove and grabbed what would have been the game tying goal out of the air to preserve the 2-1 lead.

With under a minute left, UCF pulled Moon in favor of the extra attacker. The extra man helped the Golden Knights to gain the zone and fire a few shots into traffic. When the shots go through, Goldberg was there for the stop. With 13 seconds remaining, Joe Zalewski ended any doubt, firing the puck the length of the rink and into the empty net, sealing a 3-1 victory for the Wolverines of Michigan. BOX SCORE
