Tar Heels Successful in Atlanta

The 2006-07 University of North Carolina Tar Heels

The 2006-07 season is underway for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, after traveling to Atlanta for opening weekend festivities October 7 â?? October 8.  The Tar Heels quickly found their groove, finishing the weekend 3-0-1, tied for first place in the Southeastearn Collegiate Roller Hockey League.
   
The Tar Heels opened their season with a 5-5 tie against 2005-06 SECRHL Division II runner-up and NCRHA Elite 8 Finalist Elon University, despite being out-shot by the Phoenix 30-11.  Leading the way for the Tar Heels were sophomore Curtis Labban and junior Kevin Loughran, tallying two goals apiece, while senior Brooks Henderson added two assists.
 
UNC registered their first victory of the season with a 6-3 win over the University of Miami .  In the first period, freshman Matt Williams scored his first collegiate goal and added a second goal a mere ten seconds later.  Senior Marcus Davidsson added a goal and two assists, junior Kevin Loughran registered one goal and one assist, and senior Glenn Brandys chipped in a goal. Freshman Jordan Williams, like brother Matt, also registered the first goal of his collegiate career to round out the scoring for the Tar Heels. 
 
 
The James Madison University    "B" team put up a surprising fight in the Heelsâ?? third contest of the season.  Glenn Brandys, Marcus Davidsson, Kevin Loughran, Matt Williams, and freshman Alex Pearce all scored two points, while sophomore Tony Drier scored his first goal of the season to secure the 7-5 victory over the Dukes.
 
Senior Marcus Davidsson led the way with a hat trick against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University , with Kevin Loughran and Curtis Labban registering the other two goals in a 5-2 win for the Tar Heels.  Senior goaltender Ryan Gaus turned aside 25 of 27 shots to seal the victory.
 
With a 3-0-1 record for the weekend, the Tar Heels have turned in one of their best performances to date.  The personal accolades are also numerous for the Tar Heels, leading the way in several individual categories.
 
Senior Marcus Davidsson finished the weekend third in the league in total points (9) and tied for second in assists (4).  He also leads the league in game-winning goals (2). 

Freshman Alex Pearce is also tied for second in the league in assists (4).

Senior goaltender Ryan Gaus leads the league in wins (3), saves (99), and save percentage (0.868).  Gaus is also second in the league in goals against average (3.75).

The Tar Heels are off until November 11th and 12th, when they face their next opponents at their home rink, the Carolina Sportsplex in Morrisville , NC .
