Doug Purk is one of three Tritons back for their fifth and final season of eligibility. Purk, Thomas Ames, and Ben Lambert are the first UMSL players to reach the five-year NCRHA limit, and are the final remaining members of the '04 national championship team.
2005-06 was a career year for Doug, as he finished with 24 goals and 49 points.
In '06-07, Doug finished with 31 points in 24 games. Most importantly, he came through in the clutch. He was the only UMSL player to score a goal in all four games during the early-February weekend that pitted UMSL against its top four league opponents. He also put up three points in UMSL's 7-3 win over Truman State in the GPCIHL DII championship game.
Doug is well-known around the GPCIHL for his cannon slapshot, and for good reason -- his slapper is probably the league's most deadly. Most perimeter slapshots get deflected or are shot wide. But Purk has the rare, uncanny ability to hit nothing but net with a slapshot from the point.
In the '06 postseason, his slapshot was nastier than ever. At Nationals, Doug scored five goals in seven games, including two of the most spectacular goals of the season against Nevada and Maine. In both games, he fired top-shelf slappers for key scores.
However, the rocket is just one element of Doug's exceptionally well-rounded game. He is a strong, agile skater with excellent speed who defends the rush with poise and savvy, carries the puck with confidence, and will never be intimidated physically. He is an excellent passer with slick puck skills and superb vision.
Doug is a classy, well-respected veteran whose likable personality has always been a positive influence on the rest of the team. More than just a good guy, he is a nasty competitor whose passion for the team and will to win is without question.
Doug has been a key part of the team ever since lifting the championship hardware as a freshman. Purk, Adam Clarke, Jake Shepard, and Ben Lambert are the only remaining UMSL players to put up a point for UMSL in a national championship game ('04 or '06). Purk assisted on Dory Williams' second-period power-play goal, which gave UMSL a 3-2 lead over Neumann in the eventual 4-3 win that clinched the '04 national championship.
Doug will wear the "A" on his jersey this season, joining Adam Clarke and Ben Lambert as the '07-08 UMSL captains.
