Southeastern Collegiate Roller Hockey League

Brett Kotcher, one of our referees and founder of the Valley Stream South Roller Hockey team wanted to continue his roller hockey career after playing his final Islandwide game in a quarter final loss to North Babylon in 2004.  What Kotcher did not know was the number of Islandwide alumni that would follow him down to Tampa and help the team grow into one of the top DII teams in the National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association.

After two years of countless effort and frustrating meetings, Kotcher was able to convince The University of Tampa to let him start a roller hockey team for the school.  Even though Tampa had a disappointing first season, they would soon be on the rise as one of the premier Division II teams.  Brett’s brother Jeff, Captain of Valley Stream South Falcons and a member of the 2005 Islandwide Champions would arrive at Tampa in the spring of 2008.  Jeff single handedly took Tampa from an average DII team in the Southeast to a finalist in the SECRHL regional championship game and helped Tampa earn its first invitation to the 2008 NCRHA Nationals in Colorado Springs, CO.

With Brett graduating from Tampa in 2008, Jeff was the only Islandwide member on the team, but that did not last for long.  Jeff was joined by one of the best goal scorers on the east coast, Rowan Porter.  Porter was the Captain of the 2005 Valley Stream South Falcons Championship team and had a total of 81 points in that season.  When the news got out that Porter was joining Jeff Kotcher at The University of Tampa, other Islandwide alumni quickly followed.  Marco Varrino of Syosset High School and PJ Catania of St. Anthony High School quickly joined the Tampa roster.  With four Islandwide alumni on the Tampa roster, they quickly became one of the most feared teams in the Southeast Division.  Catania, Kotcher, Porter and Varrino helped lead Tampa to an Elite Eight finish at the 2009 NCRHA Nationals in Feasterville, PA.

Even with four Islandwide alumni on the Tampa roster, they were always greedy for more.  Sam Sherman, a member of the Oceanside Sailors 2009 Spring Championship team, enrolled at Tampa and joined the squad.  With the addition of Sherman and other top recruits (Cameron Rowand of Tour Excitement 89’s and Chris “Smalls” Whelan of Tour Roadrunners 91’s) The University of Tampa is once again, one of the top teams in the NCRHA and is looking to improve on the Elite Eight exit at last years Nationals.
