The College of Charleston Cougars roller hockey team joined the National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association in 2006 and have made a great impact in the southeast league in a short period of time.
In their inaugural season as an affiliate school, the Cougars finished with 4-7-1 record, showing their potential to be a force to be reckoned with. The team returned in the 2007 season and made a complete turnaround as they finished with a 13-7 record, which was good for first place in the Southern Conference of the SECRHL. Although they came up short in the regional tournament, College of Charleston has proven to be a school on its way to the top in collegiate roller hockey. Now in their third season, the Cougars have picked up where they left off. They are off to a good start with a 5-3 record at the half way point of the season and are preparing to make a run for Pennsylvania and a berth at the national championship tournament.
The Cougars are filled with stellar talent that will help the team go to the next level. Junior Paul Fritz was among the top players in the country last season. Fritz finished the 2007-2008 season with 57 points (43 goals and 14 assists), which was good for fourth place in the country for division two. Sophomore and newcomer Allison Evans has come in and made an immediate impact between the pipes for the Cougars. After the first eight games of her collegiate career, Evans has an impressive goals against and save percentage.
The College of Charleston roller hockey team prides themselves on hard work, great leadership and the ability to become one of the elite teams not only in the southeast but in the entire NCRHA.
Cougar hockey has peaked the interest of students and is quickly becoming one of the more talked about sports on campus. With potential talent standing by to play next season along with team leaders working with the college to have a rink on the campus and an ice hockey team set to start in January of 2009, College of Charleston is working hard to build a first-class hockey program to set the bar for other schools to build not only their programs but the sport as a whole.
The team is coached by William Holcombe and was founded by Jason Torres.
